Lemosho Route Wilderness Trek – 8 Days

5/5

Unveiling Kilimanjaro's Untamed Beauty

Itinerary Summary

Lemosho Route Wilderness Trek – 8 Days

The Lemosho Route offers a unique and unforgettable pathway to conquer Kilimanjaro’s majestic peak. Often referred to as the “wilderness route,” it promises an off-the-beaten-path adventure ideal for nature enthusiasts seeking a gradual ascent and diverse landscapes. Unlike the more popular Marangu Route, which starts with a direct ascent through rainforest, the Lemosho Route provides a more gradual introduction to Kilimanjaro’s majesty. This route traverses a wider range of ecological zones, offering a chance to experience the mountain’s diverse flora and fauna. Trekkers on the Lemosho Route can expect to encounter everything from lush rainforests teeming with birdlife to stark, alpine desert landscapes.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Your adventure begins deep within the Lemosho Glades, a lush rainforest teeming with birdlife and vibrant flora. This remote starting point sets the tone for a less crowded trek compared to other Kilimanjaro routes. Enjoy a moderate climb through the rainforest canopy, reaching Mti Mkubwa Camp for your overnight stay.

Ascend through the rainforest, emerging onto the open slopes of the Shira Plateau. The landscape transforms into a high-altitude moorland, dotted with volcanic rock formations and offering expansive vistas. Keep an eye out for unique flora adapted to the harsh environment. Shira 1 Camp, nestled at 12,500 feet, provides your base for the night.

Today's trek takes you across the vast Shira Plateau, a high-altitude desert-like landscape dotted with volcanic craters and offering a sense of remoteness. Enjoy the gradual ascent, allowing for optimal acclimatization to the thinning air. Reach Shira 2 Camp perched at 13,800 feet, surrounded by breathtaking scenery.

Your journey continues with a climb towards Lava Tower, a prominent volcanic rock formation offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. After reaching Lava Tower, descend to Barranco Camp, situated at 13,000 feet amidst breathtaking scenery.

The day begins with a challenging ascent up the infamous Barranco Wall, a steep and rocky section that requires a good level of fitness. Once you conquer the Wall, the trail becomes more manageable, leading you through scenic valleys with views of the Southern Glaciers. Karanga Valley Camp, nestled at a comfortable 13,800 feet, will be your home for the night.

Continue your ascent towards the imposing Kibo Peak. Traverse through a stark alpine desert terrain, leaving behind most vegetation. Reach Barafu Camp, perched at a challenging 15,300 feet, where you'll rest and prepare for the pre-dawn summit push.

Embark on the most challenging part of your trek – the summit push. Begin your ascent in the pre-dawn hours, conquering scree slopes and experiencing the thrill of reaching Stella Point, the crater rim. From here, a short climb takes you to the ultimate goal – Uhuru Peak, the "Roof of Africa" at a staggering 19,341 feet. Celebrate your incredible achievement and soak in the breathtaking panoramas before descending to Mweka Camp for a well-deserved rest.

Descend through the lush rainforest, a welcome change from the past days' challenging terrain. Reflect on your journey and celebrate your accomplishment with your trekking crew as you reach Mweka Gate. Board your transportation back to Moshi, carrying unforgettable memories of your Lemosho Route adventure.
